Doctoral Program: Non-Catalog Courses and Extracurricular Activities

To enrich your doctoral experience, you can take additional courses beyond the standard curriculum that are related to your research or professional goals.

Subject to approval by your doctoral school, these courses may count toward your training hours. Certain special circumstances, such as holding an elected office, a jointly supervised thesis, or other activities recognized as part of the doctoral program, may also be counted toward your training hours. To learn about the conditions and procedures for recognizing non-catalog courses and extracurricular activities, please visit your doctoral school’s website.

How to Validate Training Hours Not Listed in the Catalog

The training programs listed in the catalogs (of the Doctoral College or the ED) are automatically approved by the administrators using the attendance list.
However, “non-catalog” activities that result in HF (Fixed Training Hours) must be reviewed and approved by the ED.
Requests for validation must be submitted through your ADUM account.
Please note that there is a difference between the actual hours completed as part of a training program or activity and the number of flat-rate training hours granted.

We strongly recommend that you have your courses approved as you take them, so you don’t encounter any unpleasant surprises at the end of your dissertation (except for teaching: waiting until the end of your dissertation and including all supporting documents in the same application will ensure you receive the best overall HF allowance).

Good to Know

  • Training programs not listed in the catalog require specific supporting documentation (a certificate and description of activities for an organizing committee; a program listing your name or a detailed certificate for a presentation; etc.).
  • If you're unsure about how many HF hours to enter, just enter the actual hours, and the ED will convert them.
