Préparer le doctorat

Before applying for a PhD

Prerequisites and Conditions

To register for a PhD, you must meet the general conditions for registration in thesis defined by the  decree of May 25, 2016 setting the national framework of training and the procedures leading to the issuance of the national doctoral diploma namely:
  • hold a French diploma conferring the degree of master at the end of a training course establishing the aptitude for research;
  • hold a foreign diploma of equivalent level (obtained at the end of a training course establishing the aptitude for research). In this case, you will have to ask for a Master's
  • degree exemption when you apply;
  • benefit from the validation of prior learning as provided for by the education code.
  • be admitted by a thesis director and a host laboratory to carry out the research work.

In order to apply, a thesis subject is first required and there are generally two ways to proceed:

  • Choose a topic from the current proposals, and apply as indicated.
  •  Consult the sites of Doctoral Schools and laboratories in your specialty, to find out about the proposed topics and funding. Application procedures may vary from one doctoral school to another;
  • Propose a thesis topic to a laboratory or Doctoral School (mainly in the arts, languages, humanities and social sciences). The thesis subject will then be elaborated with the future thesis supervisor.
  • Find funding with modalities that vary according to the Doctoral School.

Where to Find Thesis Subjects (non-exhaustive list) and Funding?

  • Spring: choice of thesis subject, contacts with the Doctoral School and the future thesis director.
  • June: submission of the application form to the Doctoral School.
  • July: the application form is submitted to the Doctoral School:
    • study of the applications by the doctoral schools
    • opening of recruitment for the Research and Higher Education Label (RES in French) (1st year PhD students wishing to carry out teaching assignments).
  • September to December: enrolment in the 1st year of thesis.
  • The Université Grenoble Alpes accepts, upon derogation granted by the Doctoral School, registrations outside this period, in certain cases (delay in obtaining funding for example).
  • January: application for access to the common core of Labels courses for PhD students who wish to do so.
